Guiding principles definiëren de 'spelregels' voor het ontwerpen en onderhouden van het operationele model van een organisatie. Ze bieden zowel richting als beperkingen en zorgen ervoor dat het model coherent, doelgericht en aanpasbaar blijft in de loop van de tijd.
Een organisatie kan worden gezien als een systeem, het operationele model is het doelbewuste ontwerp van dat systeem. Duidelijke principes helpen bij het maken van ontwerp keuzes:

Zorg dat u trouw blijft aan de visie, strategie en waarden van de organisatie.

Deze principes zijn geïnspireerd op bewezen bronnen zoals systeemdenken, Lean management, agile schaalbaarheidsframeworks (zoals SAFe) en organisatieontwerpdisciplines, maar zijn toegesneden op de unieke context van de organisatie. Het gaat er niet om elk detail voor te schrijven, maar om de grenzen en prioriteiten te definiëren die een veerkrachtig en effectief systeem vormgeven.
